- Join a PRO (Performing Rights Organization)
A PRO is going to help you collect all the royalties for songs that you have written, when and if they are cut by an artist, used in a tv show, performed live, etc. The three PRO’s in America are ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC. SESAC is invite only, but BMI and ASCAP can be joined at any time.
- Create Relationships
Creating relationships with other writers, music industry workers, and other musicians is so important in this industry. Co-writing with others is a good way to create a community. If you don’t know where to begin, there are even apps that you can find co-writers on. We should write sometime is an app that can help you find other writers in your area.
- Always Stay Writing
It is normal and expected to have days where you do not want to write or you feel like you can’t, but try to push through and always stay writing. Even on days when you know you’re going to write a bad song, write it. These days will only make you become a better writer because you will continue to learn and grow in your craft.
- Network, Network, Network
Networking goes hand in hand with Tip #2, creating relationships. Creating meaningful and genuine relationships with people in the industry is only going to make networking so much easier. Meeting and pitching yourself to more and more people in the industry will help your journey tremendously.
- Don’t be discouraged by “No”
In the music industry you are most likely going to hear the word no way more than the word yes. Do not let this discourage you, I am sure that most of your favorite songwriters and musicians also heard no many many times before they heard their first yes. Just keep believing, marketing, and networking yourself and that yes will be so much sweeter when you hear it.
