Dan + Shay’s vulnerable near break-up video, titled “The Drive,” was released on the duo’s instagram account on July 10, 2023. While the video itself mainly promotes their newest single, titled the exact same, it also shows Shay Mooney and Dan Smyers detailing their struggles.

In March of 2020, the duo had just started their highly-anticipated tour in Nashville when it was abruptly shut down due to COVID-19. Understandably so, the stress and pressure of restarting this tour after the live music scene restarted was immense.

According to the video, the pair stated that they were at the lowest points in their lives and didn’t like music anymore. They went on to state how their relationship with each other and their family lives were suffering due to these tensions. After the tour, the duo didn’t speak to each other for four months.

When they finally reconnected, Dan and Shay discussed whether or not they should say it was “the best 10 years of our lives” or to throw in the towel and call it quits for the band. Ultimately, they decided to work on their relationship not only with themselves and their families, but also with music.

“I can feel the closeness of our relationship and our friendship when I listen back to the music,” Dan stated in the video. “We are by far a million times the closest we’ve ever been. But we worked at it, and that makes what we’re doing now infinitely sustainable. I could do this the rest of my life with you.”

With an exchange of “I love you” from the pair, they have embarked on their latest musical journey and will continue to make music for a long time to come.
